Yusuf

One of the most prominent names in the current fine art and sculpture scenario of India, Yusuf Afzal Hussain, was born in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, in 1952. Since the 1970s, he has taken part in a large number of exhibitions, residencies and artistic activities in many countries around the globe, including Turkey, France, Japan and Dubai. His art is mostly preoccupied by the shapes and forms which are not surrounded by lines. His lines are left independent and thus, procure an infinite form of their own. For him, the lines that he creates are living units, full of limitless possibilities. Light provides them with sensuousness, breathing life into his lines and giving them dynamism as well as mobility. The artist believes that his paintings are musical notations that is yet to be born; they are the concrete shapes of vocal tunes that cannot be sung or played to music. So, each of his canvases is like those scattered and abstract musical notes, whose vibrations can be felt through our senses. His ambiguous art encourages the viewer to have an open, inquiring mind, inviting them to enter the painting and go on a voyage of deep, sensual as well as personal experience. The structural art that he creates is depicted in his own visual language, which relies on the balance and tension between colour and surface.
